Epson launches 17-inch, 10-colour professional photography, fine art and proofing printer

Epson announces the launch of the SureColor SC-P5000 17-inch, 10-colour printer incorporating Epson’s latest imaging technologies and designed for professional proofing, fine art and photography applications. The SureColor SC-P5000 replaces the popular Stylus Pro 4900 and completes the SureColor range which also includes the SC-P7000 (24-inch) and SC-P9000 (44-inch) models. The new printer features the advanced Epson PrecisionCore TFP printhead and UltraChome HDX 10-colour pigment ink set (including Orange, Green and Violet or Light Light Black) to deliver outstanding 2880x1440dpi resolution output with an increased colour gamut, higher-density blacks and twice the print permanence.

The SureColor P5000 features high-capacity 200 ml ink cartridges and supports two different ink configurations: one with Light Light Black (LLK) ink for smooth and neutral tonal transitions and support of the Epson Advanced Black and White print mode, ideal for photography, fine art and graphic design applications; the other replaces the LLK ink with Violet for an expanded colour gamut and near-perfect colour matching of up to 99% of Pantone Solid Coated Colours1, ideal for commercial and flexographic proofing applications. The UltraChrome HDX inks are 1.5 times denser than the previous generation, delivering a wider contrast ratio and improved resin encapsulation technology for superior gloss uniformity and optically clearer, sharper images.

The SC-P5000 is supported by all major RIPs and available with an optional inline SpectroProofer, incorporating the ILS30 colorimeter jointly developed with X-Rite, to provide automated colour management within a proofing workflow. Conforming to ISO lighting and measurement standards – including M1 - this solution ensures consistent, repeatable colour accuracy regardless of media. The SpectroProofer also enables printer calibration performed with Epson’s new Color Calibration Utility, an easy-to-use, fast calibration tool that can be used to ensure consistent colour across a fleet of local/remote printers. Because the calibration data is stored on the printer, support for multiple users is much simpler and the calibrated data can be used for all media types including third party.

The SC-P5000 offers versatile media handling capabilities with auto-switching between the high-capacity front paper cassette and roll media feeder. It includes a power-driven roll media spindle, ideal for producing panoramas and roll printing up to 30.5m, and an internal high-speed single pass rotary cutter. The high-capacity cassette can hold up to 100 sheets of premium paper (250 sheets standard) for high productivity printing on a range of sheet sizes (A2, A2+, A3+, A3, A4, and 17-inch (43.2 cm). In addition, the SureColor P5000 features a front feed straight path for delicate fine art sheet media, including poster board, up to 1.5mm thick. Auto-switching between roll and cassette sheet feeding allow both sources to be loaded at the same time.

The SC-P5000 has an array of newly-developed or enhanced features to ensure reliable day-to-day operation and minimise maintenance. These include new covers and seals to limit dust intrusion, an improved automatic nozzle check, static control and a guided cleaning procedure.

Phil McMullin, Business Manager, Professional Graphics, Epson UK, says, “The Stylus Pro range of printers set the benchmark for imaging excellence for many years and now the next generation of SureColor SC-P range of printers is taking Epson’s imaging technology to the next level. The new SC-P5000 brings all the SureColor printing technology into a 17-inch desktop model, giving photographers, designers and prepress professional the very best results. Colours are so precise that you can print in complete confidence, knowing the exact colour you want will be perfectly reproduced in the finished print. And you don’t even need to be an expert to get these results – the SC-P5000 is extremely simple to set up and use, and offers outstanding reliability.”

The SureColor SC-P5000 is available now in four variants: violet or LLK priced at £2,770 with SpectroProofer and £1,795 without.

Additional Epson SureColor P5000 Features:

  • Remarkable Detail: High 2880x1440dpi resolution Epson PrecisionCore TFP printhead delivers high print speeds with 360 nozzles per colour channel, with variable-size ink droplets as small as 3.5 picoliters
  • Exceptional Print Permanence: Offers next-generation pigment ink technology for up to twice the overall print permanence than previous generation
  • LCD Control Panel: LCD panel allows for easy step-by-step setup, control and maintenance of the printer
  • Borderless Printing: Four-sided border-free printing is available at common widths
  • Improved light-fastness of inks delivers an extra 15 years' stability2
  • Timer cleaning (TCL) to automate cleaning process
