PSCo hosts first ever UK-based Epson Pro AV Academy
By Leonie Toal

Partnering with Epson, leading manufacturer of professional projection solutions, PSCo opened its doors to customers to attend the one-day course, “The Epson Pro AV Academy”.
The course, which filled to capacity within 24 hours of the invite being released, was run by Alan Dempster, Professional Displays Technical Specialist for Epson Europe. Amongst the topics included in the course was a background to projection history and the various systems used over the years, followed by an explanation of how lighting sources had today moved towards solid-state laser units. Attendees were then given the chance to explore the features found in Epson’s newest range of ‘L’ Series Laser Phosphor Installation projectors.
The second part of the day consisted of a practical ‘hands-on’ session, including a product shootout, showing the quality and performance benefits of Epson’s 3LCD optical engine versus competitor projection technologies.
Delegates were able to try their hand at lens installation on the EB-L25000U - Epson’s flagship 25,000 lumen laser model. This was followed by a demo on how to set up a two-projector edge blend using the 12,000 lumen EB-L1505U. The participants were surprised at just how easily a high-quality panoramic image could be produced, using only a high-end PC and the built-in image processing capabilities of the projector.
During the day, delegates learned how to specify the right projector for a particular scenario, select and install a projection lens and set the projector up in such a way that the best possible image was produced from different source materials, and in a range of different venues.
The Pro AV Academy is designed to empower customers to know more, and to take away the core skills needed to make the most of today’s projection technology. Customers completed the training with the practical skills that enabled them to feel comfortable specifying and setting up a projector for any upcoming event or project.
The training concluded with a brief technical quiz to test knowledge collected during the day, with a prize for the highest scoring candidate! Every attendee was awarded with a Pro AV Academy T-shirt, and an 'Epson Certified Pro AV Field Professional' certificate as a memento of the day.
Course instructor Alan Dempster commented, “It was an excellent start to our Pro AV Academy here in the UK, and PSCo was the perfect partner with whom to launch the course. Having invested substantially in our professional projector range for its own rental fleet, we knew that PSCo really understood the installation, rental and staging markets, and so were the perfect associates for our training. The guys who attended this first workshop seemed really keen, so I’m looking forward to running the next Pro AV Academy course at PSCo in the near future.”
Rob Myer, Director of Light Fantastic, attended the training: “The Pro AV Academy was a great opportunity to learn more about the Epson laser projector range and its practical applications. The level of depth into the products and especially the blending and warping capabilities was brilliant. The very open and engaging format of the day (without too much ‘Death by PowerPoint’) and the contributions from all the participants made it a really interesting and informative day out of the office!”
Rob continued: “The Epson Academy was particularly interesting to us, as we already had a pair of Epson 25K laser units booked for a show the following week, to create a 14 x 3 metre edge blend. The opportunity to get ‘hands on’ with the units in advance of the show was perfectly timed and really beneficial.”
