Epson is the print partner of the European Green Capital

Epson supports the European Green Capital, Essen as a commercial partner with its sustainable technology. As part of the partnership, Epson with its German headquarters in nearby Meerbusch has equipped the Green Capital office with environmentally-friendly office devices. Since January 2017, energy-efficient ink jet printers have been in use, in the Essen office, including both devices for the workplace and departmental printers.
“As the European Green Capital, Essen is an example for many towns and cities throughout Europe. To establish a culture of sustainability on a permanent basis requires commitment, passion and resilience. Sometimes it also demands the courage to leave well-trodden paths and to re-think long-established routines”, says Henning Ohlsson, Managing Director of Epson Germany and Epson CSR Director for Europe and Africa.
“Environmentally conscious work starts off in a small way; for example, with printing in the office. As a leading company in this area, Epson places its faith in ink jet technology to support office printing. It is energy-saving, quick and inexpensive. The Green Capital office has recognised this opportunity and demonstrates how environmental protection can be implemented in many aspects of daily life,”continues Ohlsson.
“As the European Green Capital we naturally examine which partners suit us”, says Simone Raskob, Project Manager of the European Green Capital – Essen 2017 and City Councillor for Environment and Construction of the city of Essen.
“Epson solutions enable daily office work to be carried out in a more environmentally-friendly manner and resources can be saved. We have been using this technology for some time in our project office and are very satisfied with the collaboration.”
Epson’s commitment to the European Green Capital
Epson WorkForce Pro devices, which are special ink jet printers for office work, are in use at the Essen project office. Thanks to modern technology, the devices print in an energy-saving manner; they require around 96 percent less electricity than laser printers, and are quick and inexpensive. The WorkForce Pro RIPS devices use ink bags, which can print up to 75,000 pages. In environments where a high amount of printing is carried out, it makes economic printing possible, waste is avoided and storage space reduced.
Additionally, mobile Epson projectors are available to all the team. For example, in the Information and Creativity Centre, Epson EcoTanks printers with ink tanks instead of cartridges and label printers are in use. Project-T-shirts are printed with individual motifs using special Epson textile printers and it is planned to provide Epson Moverio smart glasses for visitor tours.
Epson will also participate in various Green Capital events, such as the Movement Day in Essen
About the European Green Capital
On 18 June 2015 the European Commission awarded the title “European Green Capital 2017” to the city of Essen. One European city is honoured with the title for having achieved proven high environmental standards and for continuously pursuing objectives for an ongoing improvement in environmental protection and sustainable development. During the Green Capital year numerous events, congresses and citizens' projects take place to initiate sustainable processes and developments to secure long-term improvement in the quality of life for the city of Essen. As part of this, the involvement of the citizens is of decisive importance. The city of Essen is the only European city to have held the titles of City of Culture (2010) and European Green Capital (2017), launching a ‘green decade’. The reconstruction of the River Emscher will be completed in 2020; in 2022, the results of the KlimaExpo. NRW climate change initiative will be presented; and in December, the region was awarded the International Garden Exhibition 2027.
